WHAT DOES MERCURY DO TO YOUR SKIN?

"Mercury is prohibited in cosmetic products because it can be harmful to health. It can be absorbed into the body and cause damage to the kidneys and nervous system. It can also interfere with the brain development of young or unborn children and can cause rashes, irritations and other changes in the skin,"

As discussed in our previous article -Skin whitening, it is well-known among our Asian society and culture that having light skin is highly associated with more luck, higher social status and better privileges. More importantly, having a lighter skin means you look more beautiful. Because of this scenario and unfair judgmental culture, women are literally forced to have a light skin so that they can comfortably fit in the so-called “beautiful society”. Then, comes the vast range of whitening products available in the market to feed these desperate women who have great hunger for white-beauty. These products are sold in cheap, affordable price for these non-white women to choose and use to whiten their skin. In addition, these products do not only give such a promising whitening effect, but it also provides its users a faster action and result, thus turning a crow to a white pigeon in no time.

In cosmetic world, mercury is an effective ingredient that can do the job of skin whitening and bleaching excellently. Two common forms of inorganic mercury are mercurous (Hg+ ) and mercuric (Hg2+) salts (Park & Zheng 2012). Mercury salts block the production of melanin by replacing tyrosinase enzyme anions, resulting in a lighter skin tone, anti-freckle and anti-blemishes effects. This statement gives a strong reason why mercury is a common ingredient found in most skin whitening products such as lightening cream, day and night cream, soap, mask, etc. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mercury levels in skin lightening products should be less than one part per millions (ppm). Blinding the WHO requirement, in order to compete and win profitably, whitening product manufacturers formulate their products with high amount of mercury so the consumers will get lighter skin sooner. With high level of mercury, those products are highly toxic and super poisonous to one’s skin and later will be absorbed slowly into the body system through touch, inhalation and ingestion.

In Malaysia, there are thousands of whitening products that have been banned by Ministry of Health over the years due to high concentration of scheduled poison of mercury. Despite tight regulations and law enforcement on mercury prohibition, we still find thousands of local whitening products in the market, containing unacceptable high level of mercury. Many consumers are still helplessly defeated by these products’ bombastic marketing and promotions. In initial stage of using these harmful whitening cream, the users will get the most wanted effect of whitening instantly. Their skin will look so light, white, radiant and smooth like skin of an egg. But once the product is continuously used in long term, later they will get an extensive list of ugly side effects such as skin hyperpigmentation, slate-grey skin colour, rashes, blotchy spots, thin face skin, redness, burnt-like, etc.

All in all, prevention is better than cure. After knowing all the bad consequences of mercury exposure and poisoning, we should 100% avoid any kind of products containing mercury. Because once a damage is done, sometimes we could cure and reverse to normal state. But in some unlucky events, the damage is irreversible and become permanent. At that moment, it is already too late to regret.

THE CAUSES OF SKIN AGING

           THE CAUSES OF SKIN AGING

Aging is a natural process to happen to everyone with the increase of the number of living years. The more years you live, the longer aging process you have to undergo, the more aging signs you will have to live through. Aging starts from beginning of adulthood and it ends when one passes away. People age differently and experience multiple different changes while aging. Those changes are expected; some are avoidable and reversible but some other changes are unavoidable and irreversible. With age, bones tend to shrink in size and density, weakening and become prone to fracture. Furthermore, muscles generally lose its strength, endurance and flexibility, thus affecting overall body balancing, coordination and stability. Aged people also tend to lose their teeth more and faster than younger adults. Most of the time, their hair turned to be greyish, whitens and loses its volume. These physical changes are considered enormously normal though being unwelcomed and undesired by some “antiaging” society.

Other significant change with aging is how skin ages and creates some clear and unambiguous signs, for instance, more noticeable wrinkles, age spots, dryness or loss of skin tone. Additionally, many aging people also suffer hyperpigmentation, darker freckles, saggy skin and sunken cheeks (gaunt face). Like other body parts, skin also ages at different pace depending on many vital aging factors, namely; 1) Intrinsic and 2) Extrinsic factor. Intrinsic factors include the predestined physiological process which are highly associated with gender, ethnicity, genetics, body composition and anatomical variations. Intrinsic aging yields the dry, thin skin and fine wrinkles. This specific factor is very unique and individualized, therefore resulting in consequentially inimitable individual skin changes amongst aging people.

Inversely, the extrinsic skin aging produces some apparent signs such as coarse wrinkles, increase appearance of wrinkles, skin thinning, loss of elasticity, laxity, discoloration and fragility. These extrinsic signs are frequently avoidable, preventable, reversible, and strongly connected with external environment factors, as discussed below:

            1) Sun exposure/UV light

Overexposure to UV light and sunlight cause the skin to age much faster than it should be as both can damage skin cells by increasing the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which at higher concentrations can damage the main proteins in the skin, the collagen and elastin.

Photo aging is the side effect of UV light, promoting premature age spots.

UV radiation can also cause skin cancer.

            2) Smoking

Smoking is toxic and harmful for human cells. Skin has collagen as protein to maintain its elasticity. However, smoking stimulates the production of enzyme that breaks down collagen. So that is why the skin loses its elasticity and makes the smokers look much older than their natural age.

Smoking also causes premature wrinkling, sagging, and gaunt look.

            3) Excessive alcohol consumption

Daily consumption of alcohols accelerated biological aging much faster because drinking too much alcohols in a long run is highly associated with many chronic diseases such as liver failure, cancers, brain damage, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, etc.

            4) Chronic stress

When you are under massive stress, your body automatically produces stress hormone called cortisol. Cortisol blocks collagen, thus making you look old.

Stress can cause inflammation and damage to DNA in cells, which in turn can accelerate aging. 5) Poor nutrition -Diet in high sugar and carbohydrates can stimulate premature aging.

Diet high in vitamin rich food like fruits and vegetables can postpone aging.

Foods good for skin are already discussed in previous article.

           6) Dehydration

In general, adults who consumed less or insufficient daily water requirement are more likely to get many chronic diseases later in life. For example, stroke, high blood pressure, kidney failure, seizures etc.

Thus, with these diseases, poor hydration may accelerate biological aging.

             7) Skin care products

Products contain high in poisonous mercury is harmful to skin, contributing to ugly side effects such as skin hyperpigmentation, slate-grey skin colour, rashes, blotchy spots, thin face skin, redness, burnt-like, etc.

These unpleasant conditions make you look older.

            8) Poor sleep

Enough sleep is very imperative to sustain a healthy body. Less sleep makes your body ages faster

To sum up, after learning all kinds of causes of aging, we should embrace aging with a more welcoming, positive and open-arms. Since we know we will age eventually, we should do more proactive methods to slow down biological aging, prevent premature aging, and most importantly, we must stay as healthy as possible to live longer, and happier. Factually, healthier and happier people always look younger than their own age.

Skin is the largest organ of human body, performing such a tremendous number of roles mainly to execute 8 primary functions which include; protection, sensation, temperature regulation, immunity, permit movement and growth, excretion, endocrine, absorption and water resistance (New Health Advisor, 2024). Human skin is made up of three layers, epidermis (top), subcutaneous layer and dermis (bottom). Like most organs, skin also has a lot of relatable diseases and illnesses. One of them is called ingrown toenails.

Ingrown toenail is a common condition in which the corner or side of toenail grows into the skin and flesh as a result of cutting toenails too short. For some, this condition is less painful. However, other people who developed more severe in growing toenails suffered an extreme amount of pain through days and nights. Luckily, with right treatment and medications given by the right expert, one should be able to be back on their feet within a short period of time. Some elders suggest many traditional remedies or techniques to cure the ingrown toenail at home, for instance, soak the feet in warm water 3-4 times a day, apply petroleum jelly, place cotton or dental floss under the toe, etc. However, most of the time, this kind of pain will not easily go away without proper medical intervention. So, patients with this condition must seek for medical help if the pain is stagnant or become worse

At Zeyls Clinic, we have encountered one special patient who was diagnosed with ingrown toenail. Her name is Ms. Farah. A 24-years-old lady from Kulai, Johor. Farah went to Zelys in Mid-September of 2023. We could still remember how difficult she was to even walk properly. Her right toe was red, swollen and had some abscess. She was in extreme pain and her toe could not be touched at all due to the developed infections. Actually, the pain was started 2 days earlier before she decided to seek help from our doctor at Zeyls. It happened after Farah coincidentally cut the toe nail incorrectly. Then, the pain had been worsening and she could not sleep well in the night. She was also worry and scared if the pain is not resolved soon, she might not be able to walk on the once a life time event to receive her degree scroll. The clock was ticking very fast because her convocation day was around the corner.

After examining Farah’s condition, our aesthetic consultant Datin Dr. Suhaila Sujani, took an immediate professional approach by giving her two kinds of medications to be taken continuously for three days. The next day, Farah stated that her pain was reduced significantly and, in the night, she could sleep soundly. She was very thrilled and delighted that she could have a memorable convocation, not a nightmare one.

“I am so glad that thankfully I would be able to receive my university degree scroll during the convocation with a huge smile. I cannot imagine how am I going to carry myself throughout the entire ceremony while bearing those unforgettable ingrown toenail pain at my right toe. Miraculously, within just a matter of days, my terrible pain was completely gone. Thank you to Datin Dr. Suhaila & team at

Naturally, scars happen as a result of skin healing after being damaged by cut, infections, surgery or injuries. The skin will repair itself by growing new tissues (new collagen fibers) to fill in the gaps in the wound and to mend the damage. During the final stage of wound healing, body automatically stops the collagen production. Once the wound is completely healed, then scar appears. Most scars are flat and pale in color because of the absence of collagen. But in some cases, body produces too much collagens causing the scars to rise and become more visible. These scars are called hypertrophic scars and keloids. Both of these scars commonly appeared on the skin surface, and look very much alike, thus leading to confusion among layman. The table below shows some easy ways to identify and differentiate them:

Since both of these scars developed due to almost similar root causes, the treatments for both are quite mirroring as well. But patients must be well-informed that it is almost impossible to get rid of these scars entirely from the skin surface. The definite and ultimate goals for doing the right treatment is to flatten, soften, reduce the size, lighten the color and vanish any existing pain or itch caused by the scars. Therefore, the most suitable

The last option after all other possible treatments have failed.

For the conclusion, depending on the growth location, size and severity, keloids or hypertrophic scars could be painful, physically and emotionally. Some patients often mentioned it as disturbing and obnoxious thus potentially reduce the patient’s self-esteem and confidence. Thankfully, these kinds of scars can be treated with eithersingle or combined treatments. But for safety and long-term consequence reason, the treatments must be provided by the right expert such as dermatologist or medical doctor or certified aesthetician. Inaccurate or wrong diagnosis leads to incorrect medication or treatment, yielding in bad scarhealing management and worse side effects, for example, skin irritations, burnt skin, PIH, redness, swelling, etc.

           PATIENT STORIES: ACNE AFTER WEDDING

“Through out my whole life, I have seen so many people around me, including my family members and close friends, had terrible acne issues. Pimples, white heads, blackheads, red bumps etc. But it never happened to me. Yes, I had a little bit of tiny pimples here and there, usually around my period time, but I had never experienced any huge acne or break out. So, I don’t really understand how disastrous the feeling of having bad acne issue. Until one day, it hit me horribly, a week after I got married. I just could not believe it! I felt so miserable and sad. I was so shameful, especially to my newly-wed husband. I even did not want to leave the house.” – Airina

Conspicuously, acne-causing bacteria, dead skins cells, and oil from a person’s skin can stick to makeup, makeup brushes and applicators, then migrate to another person’s face if they both shared similar makeup and tools. Those acne-causing culprits can easily spread to other skins, leading to new breakouts. This unfortunate event actually happened to one lady called Ms. Airina who came to Zeyls in September 2023 to seek for professional skin help regarding her unexpected acne symptoms.

Ms. Airina is a 27-years old- administrative executive, working in GP clinic in Kulai. According to her, she never had any bad acne experience in her entire life until a week after she got married, her face skin developed a wild break out of acnes. The infected area was clearly seen, big, reddish, itchy, had some abscess, painful and turned redder in color if covered with scarf. Her self-confidence was broken into pieces especially when facing her newly-wed husband. She even refused to go for their planned honeymoon because of her unwell face skin.

During the consultation with our skin expert, Datin Dr. Suhaila Sujani, Airina mentioned that the only possible cause of her acne was the bacterial infection due to sharing of makeup products and tools by her hired makeup artist. Frankly, in making more profits in this business, some makeup artists used the same products and tools for many clients, brides and bridesmaids. For those who are lucky, nothing bad would happen to their face. On the other hand, those who are unlucky like Airina, they suffered a greatly traumatized consequence.

At Zelys, Airina was given a wholesome set of treatments, namely; chemical peel, fire and ice, and microdermabrasion. It took about a month for her to get rid of all acnes, and another month to fully healed from the scars. Airina is now happy to get back her healthy beautiful skin again. She hopes that she will never ever has to suffer this incident again. She promised to be more careful in hiring any makeup artist in the future and she hopes that other women to be extra cautious, educated and well-informed about consequences of bacterial infection and acne. We, Zeyls beauty team, are happy too, to create another smile on our patient’s face.

Being the largest amongst all body organs, skin is an absolute unique organ functioning generally as body protection against germs, body temperature regulation and enables touch sensation. It is comprised of three main layers namely, epidermis (top layer), dermis (middle layer) and hypodermis (bottom). Each of these specific layers has its own decent marvelous functions and these 3 siblings work hand-in-hand harmoniously to perform skin’s best functions at all time. Face skin is considered the most important part of all skins since it is the only part that is seen by others, most of the time. Many people believe that in order to keep face skin as healthy as possible, one should have basic skin care routine every day, starting from cleansing the face thoroughly with proper cleanser, then applying the toner and moisturizer, after that applying sunscreen, serum and booster, and lastly using mask or exfoliator.

On the other hand, some other people might have completely different opinion to keep the face skin healthy. This second group of people really focus on what kinds of foods they consume everyday and they believe that a proper and well-nourished body will greatly contribute to a healthier, smoother and more radiant skin. Subsequently, the face will speak for itself by showing more radiance and looking more glowing.

For the nutshell, it is utterly normal to have different views and opinions regarding ways to keeping the skin healthy. A discussion on skin specifically becomes more beautiful and fruitful when many amazing opinions and perspectives are shared for the benefit of all. In gaining a truly healthy skin, we should do both external and internal methods, which means we should appreciate both groups’ opinions. To get a healthy skin, we must have our own correct skincare routine and also, we must eat all kinds of food that are good for skin health. By doing both ways, it is hoped that our skin will always be healthful and youthful.

Being part of Asia and South-East Asia, Malaysia is blessed with a vast multi-racial group of citizens, mainly Malays, Chinese, Indians, and other indigenous ethnicities like Kadazan, Dusun, Iban, Murut, Sungai, Suluk, Bajau etc. Historically, our ancestors came from various roots and places from all over the globe. Our ethnicity was a chaotic mixture of Asians and many other races from non-Asian continents such as Africa, America and Australia. Due to that genetic and DNA reasons, today we have an extensive range of skin tones, from palest hues to the darkest browns. We embrace that we are all beautiful in our own skin colors. However, since hundreds of years ago, some cultures engaged light skin with higher status, privileges and beauty. In some other cultures, lighter skin did not only associate with beauty, but it will also bring you to better opportunities and luck for employment, marriage and social standing. Therefore, people mostly women who have darker skin color feel the excessive urge to bleach their skin to look more beautiful, attract high-status mates and be acceptable in the “white-light-skin” society.

Nowadays, there are thousands kind of makeup products, skin care items, and cosmetics available on market for Malaysian women to make their skin glow and radiant. Frequently, these products contain some lightening agents such as Vitamin C, niacinamide, kojic acid and arbutin. Nevertheless, for women who want their skin color to be much lighter or we call it “whiter”, those products are considered insufficient. Thus, they require a more active and faster-result treatments for skin lightening. At Zeyls, we provide our patients with these well-proven treatments:

             . Skin booster injections

             Stem-cell injections

            Whitening cream and some medications

Despite giving the lightening and brightening effects that our patients want; these procedures also have some disadvantages. Firstly, it can only work at some skin areas. Secondly, it can only even the existing skin tone, not whiten the whole skin up. Meanwhile, some other spa and clinics offer a more invasive treatment like injections high in whitening agents (i.e. glutathione). But patients should be well-informed and responsible about the risk they have to take and possible long term bad side effects of it because prohibiting too much of melanin can result in skin cancer in the future.

To sum up, skin lightening to make skin tone more even is acceptably normal. We understand how even skin tone can boost one’s self-esteem and confidence, wonderfully. But if one person wants to undergo any skin whitening and bleaching treatments for the sake of having a completely whiter skin or desired paler skin, just for fun or just to please others, we strongly disagree with that idea. Because being white in color, being happier for some impermanent moments, but later having skin cancer is the last thing we want to happen to our patients, or anyone in this world.

SKIN DARKENING

Skin darkening is a condition when your skin undergoes hyperpigmentation, causing excessive melanin production thus subsequently changing skin color to be darker than normal. Depending on skin types, skin darkening can either be mild or extreme. Skin type 1,2 and 3 are prone to skin darkening while type 4, 5 and 6 are more sensitive towards skin discoloration. Even though daily sunlight exposure is exceedingly important for Vitamin D consumption, calcium absorption in the body and prevention of osteoporosis, being exposed to sweltering sun can also cause the skin to darken in color. The longer the skin are exposed to sunlight, then more activation of melanin production, thus the darker the skin will turn.

           Other than sunlight exposure, skin darkening can be caused by many other significant factors including;

            1. Skin infection -Some skin area becomes dark due to infections at hair follicles and sebaceous gland as a result of acne and pinching of acne.

            2. Medical illnesses -Some skin areas darken because of kidney disease, anemia, liver disease or any disease related to blood.

            3. Hormonal -Some pregnant mothers develop darker skin due to endocrinological changes. Pregnancy hormones like progesterone and estrogen can cause noticeable darker skin at some areas such as breast, nipples, armpits, inner thighs and genital.

            4. Food -Food that high in copper like spinach, kale, mustard greens, legumes, asparagus, summer squash, legumes, nuts, and whole grains. -Tanning foods are cherries, watermelon and other red fruits like peaches, apricot and melons. -Food high in beta-carotene can cause orangish yellow discoloration to the skin. For example, carrots, squash, sweet potato and cantaloupe.

           5. Lifestyle -Smoking can cause unhealthy skin, thus producing uneven or darker skin tone. -Alcoholism can cause immense dehydration to the body. The dehydrated skin lost its fluid and nutrients vital for skin healthiness. Dry skin wrinkles more quickly and can look dull and grey, or even darker brownish color. -Prolonged alcohol consumption will lead to liver diseases like hepatitis and cirrhosis. These diseases can cause numerous changes to the body and skin such as jaundice (yellowing skin) or darker skin around eyes area.

Skin darkening does not only cause unpleasant and obnoxious look, but it also reduces one’s confidence and self-esteem tremendously. To prevent skin darkening from reoccurrence, these are some valuable tips for you:

            1. Use sunscreen wisely.

            2. Wear more covering outfits.

            3. Wear caps/hats and shades.

            4. Apply lightening cream that contains Vitamin C, niacinamide, kojic acid and arbutin.

           5. Do not use any whitening products to darkened skins because sometimes it can cause the skin to be even darker.

For people who suffered skin darkening, they are so desperate and zealous to lighten their skin or to bring their skin back to normal previous tone. So, most of the time, they think that skin whitening will be the greatest option. In current colossal cosmetic and skin care world, we can easily find abundance of makeup products and skin cares, claiming that they have the ability to whiten skins to lighter or desired skin tone. Nonetheless, skin whitening can brutally kill all melanin that are essential and crucial for skin protection against harmful UV rays. Without melanin, the skin will be hypopigmented, resulting in highly sensitive skin, easily damaged and mutated by UV. Most of whitening products contain massive volume of bleaching agents like hydroquinone, mercury, lead, and glutathione. These ingredients are unquestionably dangerous and can cause many atrocious complications such as skin darkening, infertility in reproduction system and primarily, skin cancer.

In the nutshell, darkened skin can be treated well according to many root causes. In order to regain original skin color, one should get professional consultation and guidance from skin experts or trusted dermatologists. At Zeyls Clinic, our aesthetician, Datin Dr. Suhaila Sujani will guide you to the right path to heal and rejuvenate your skin. We hope that all consumers will be more precautious about harmful skin whitening products.

In Malaysia, people always misunderstood or misused the term “Eye bag” while referring to dark eye circle (DEC). The right definition for dark eye circle is the skin area under your eyes has changed color or looks darkened. It may appear as shades of black, brown, purple, and blue, depending on your natural skin color. Though dark eye circle does not represent any symptoms of acute medical issues, it does make you look tired all the time. Unfortunately, sometimes it makes you look much older than your personal age. Furthermore, people who has dark eye circle looks unpresentable, weak, sunken and puffy eyes. Therefore, these people feel less confident and less productive to work, or face other people. In some serious occasions, they even avoid public.

In treating dark eye circle (DEC), we categorize the treatments into two main classes, medical (medications, drugs, cream) and non-medical (lifestyle changes). For medical, after consultation with our skin expert, Datin Dr. Suhaila Sujani, we usually start DEC treatment with noninvasive meds such as topical cream containing cafein to help lighten the dark skin under eye area. After that, we continue with applying some whitening cream containing Vitamin C and Kojic Acid to enrich the dark skin with more helpful lightening substances. Then, if needed, we also provide our patients with invasive treatment; for instance, chemical peels, laser therapy, or PRP injections (Platlet-rich-plasma). In addition, we also perform dermal fillers, anti-wrinkle and skin booster injections.

As stated earlier, the second kind of DEC treatment is the change of lifestyle. To get rid of DEC, one MUST have a healthy lifestyle which includes enough rest and sleep, quit smoking, stop consuming alcohols, drink more/enough water, reduce stresses, and use sunscreen under eyes on daily basis. To sum up, DEC once treated, does not only boost one’s self-confidence but also create spark and joy to his/her life. Thus, producing a happier human being who has a better quality of life.

In general, skin delivers three important functions to the body, mainly; protection, thermoregulation and sensation. Skin is composed of

different layers of epidermis, dermis and hypodermis. Each skin layer has its own special and unique structure and characteristics, thus ensuring precise functions, blending works with each other and helping the whole skin system to maximize its functionality.

Besides that, each layer also creates such a great boundary but runs amazing work chemistry at the same time. The picture below shows the graphical structure of skin layers in more simplified version for better understanding:

Melanin cause the dark spot at the skin

Skin covers the whole-body, protects it from any harmful environmental substances and becomes the first line of defense from any possible treat to the immunity system. There are a wide range of skin colors representing various races and ethnicities from all over the world. Skin tone colors vary from pale(light), fair, and medium to brown, dark brown and black.

Besides skin, the color of hair and eyes are also unique and different, rooting to many factors including different type of people from several continents, inherited genetics and sub- locations. As discussed in the previous chapter, skin has 3 main layers, namely epidermis, dermis and hypodermis. The determination of skin, hair and eye color happens solely in the epidermis layer where the melanin is produced.

Melanin is a term used to describe a large group of related molecules responsible for many biological functions, mainly pigmentation of skin and hair and photoprotection of skin and eye (1). In the epidermis layer, deep down close to the basal layer, melanocytes are found. Melanocytes contain spherical shaped melanosomes which are also referred as factories for melanin. Inside the melanosomes, some important chemical reactions take place and turn the amino acid, Tyrosine into melanin. The proportion of two main forms of melanin produced, a reddish-yellow type verses a black-brown type, the total amount of melanin in each melanosome and the number of melanosomes in the epidermis, all vary from person to person and determine their skin colour.

Even though melanosomes are the melanin factories, in order for melanin to function, melanosomes need to be transported to the keratinocytes via melanocytes long projections. Then, inside keratinocytes, some melanosomes form a cap around the cell nucleus. This is where the most vital and notable function of melanin can be seen. The melanin inside the melanosome absorbs the ultraviolet energy from sunlight, reducing the amount of ultraviolet radiation that reaches the nucleus and the DNA inside the nucleus. These reactions clearly portray how melanin protects the skin from the harmful UV rays including UVA, UVB, UVC and blue light. UV radiation can cause DNA mutations that can lead to cancer. When UV radiation increases, melanin production increases and more melanosomes are delivered to keratinocytes.

The table below shows the three main forms of melanin exist in humans (2):

Additionally, melanin level inside the skin is affected by some factors; age, UV light exposure, inflammation and changes in hormone levels. When too much of melanin is produced, hyperpigmentation occurs. Other conditions that are strongly related to the increase production of melanin are Addison’s disease, hemochromatosis and pregnancy. All in all, melanin is undoubtedly crucial for skin welfare, functionality and overall skin health.

In accordance to the need of skin, melanin could be a life savior and great protector against multiple acute chronic diseases especially skin cancer. Nevertheless, too much or too less production of melanin can trigger other unwanted illnesses as well. Therefore, one should acquire more knowledge about the beauty and the beast of melanin to secure a better skin performance and suitable required pigmentation.

is a skin condition caused by clogged pores, bacterial infections or inflammation, thus producing acne symptoms such as pimples, white heads and black heads. Acne is very common to happen among teenagers, young adults and people under 30 years old. Teenagers often get acne caused by regular hormonal changes and lack of personal hygiene.

There are hundreds or even thousands of products related to skin problems especially acne, are available in the market. Unfortunately, young publics tend to be easily influenced by those products’ promotion and marketing because they were misinformed and received untrue knowledge about skin anatomically and physiologically. Then, they use the products without any professional guidance or recommendations by skin experts. Later, they have to bear any bad consequences or traumatic side effects on their skins.

           In medical field, acne is classified as comedogenic, inflammatory, papules, nodules, pustules, and cystic acne. Each type of acne has its own specific way to treat. Furthermore, unlike infections, acne can also be caused by mites (demodex mites;

It consumes all epidermis cells and sebum components, and then migrates into another skin layer, (usually rich in sebum glands) for example, forehead, cheek, eyelid, and chin. Those mites turn the skin to be very dry, peeled, rashes, and red.

Other than face, this acne can grow at any other body parts such as upper and lower back, head, armpits and pubic area. Besides that, a cluster of many small, itchy, red bumps can also be seen on chest and arms.

In addition, acne can be repeatedly and continuously grown on one’s skin if not treated well by professional skin expert. Acne must be treated from the root cause in order to vanish it completely, using the right treatment and medications. Only medical doctors who have special certification in skin, great experience in skin treatment and licensed aestheticians can give advice on how to treat your acne. Treatments done based on inaccurate diagnosis can lead to unsolved acne problem, unwell skin, inflammations, thinned and reddish skin. As mentioned earlier, acne among teenagers and young adults are caused by hormones and hygiene. However, if the acne is still happened to adults more than 30 years of age, these are ten possible reasons:

In conclusion, after knowing all types of acnes and its causes, we should enrich ourself with more accurate knowledge about how to have a healthier skin. Otherwise, any unwise decision we make in solving our acne issue will just victimize our skin, and later cause more significant unwanted skin problems. On top of that, we might spend thousands of dollars for nothing.

Therefore, we should start finding our trusted skin experts and get treatments at the best skin clinic, accordingly.

           Why My Armpit Become Dark?

Dark armpit trouble most of people

Armpit or underarm is the area underneath your upper arm, where it connects to the shoulder and it is medically called axilla. In our Asian culture, armpit is most commonly related with poor hygiene due the smelly, stinky odor it produced after sweaty physical activities. Some people with strong body odor find this situation as disturbing, annoying and eventually reducing one’s self-esteem, confidence and pride. Besides the smelly odor, another familiar issue related to armpit is how it becomes dark in color even though it is located under the shoulder, unexposed to direct sunlight and most of the time being covered by clothes, on daily basis under humid and sunny Malaysian weather.

Due to its folded skin area, dark or discolored armpit is also scientifically mentioned as Acanthosis nigricans. There are several important factors contributing to armpit darkening or discoloration, namely:

1. Deodorant or antiperspirant use

-In order to prevent smelly armpits, adults usually apply or spray some deodorant on the armpit skin, daily. The deodorant is very helpful in keeping the odor away. However, some of these products contain active ingredients or chemicals that can cause irritations and pigmentations to the sensitive underarm skin. Yieldingly, the affected areas darken in no time.

           2. Shaving and waxing

The growing hair at underarms is very beneficial to protect the skin from skin-to-skin irritation during any arm motion. But when it grows longer, people often remove it by shaving or waxing to make the area clean and smooth. Razors or any bladed tools are commonly used. However, harsh shaving does not only remove hair, but it also vanishes top skin layer, thus leading to skin darkening. Additionally, shaving can also promote the ingrown hair which later causes skin to darken as well.

           3. Friction due to tight clothing

Tight clothing is considered a factor to darkened armpit because of the excessive amount of cloth-to-skin rubbing in which can cause irritation and inflammation to the armpit skin.

           4. Hormonal disorders

Patients who have hormonal disorders like PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) or hypothyroidism can get darker armpit due to increase in the level of testosterone and thyroxine.

           5. Dead skin accumulation

Underarm area is usually folded and hidden area. It also can accumulate a lot of dead skin cells, sweats, dirt, impurities and some materials from the cloth. These combo results in darker skin tone of armpit.

           6. Obesity

Obese people frequently suffer more skin-to-skin frictions because their arm and the whole body is much larger in size as compared to non-obese people. The excessive number of rubbings on daily basis yielded more skin irritations, which then eventually darken the skin.

           7. Poor hygiene

Undoubtedly, insufficient hygiene routines may stimulate the buildup of dead skin cells, sweat and bacteria at the folded skin area like armpit. In normal practice in Malaysia, under humid and sunny weather, people shower 2-3 times a day and use body care products accordingly to clean their body from dirt or bacteria. But people who practice less hygienic lifestyle will have unclean skin, thus creating a darker skin tone over a short period of time.

Truthfully, there are multiple other causes of dark armpits that are not discussed here. For example; genetics, infections, allergic reactions, melasma, hyperpigmentation, pharmaceutical drugs, insulin resistant etc. It is a relief to discover that dark armpits rooted to different causes are treatable respectively. Nevertheless, one should seek professional help and guidance from the right skin expert before starting any move. At Zeyls Clinic, our LCP- certified skin specialist, Datin Dr. Suhaila Sujani will usher you to the right direction towards lighter armpits as per dreamt.

From 8:00 AM till 9:50 AM, the school grounds reverberated with excitement as students delved into various sports activities and health screenings. But it wasn't just about physical exertion; it was about nurturing young minds and bodies, laying the foundation for a lifetime of well-being.

Participating in the Health Sports Campaign wasn't just about winning prizes (although, let's be honest, who doesn't love a lucky draw?). It was about fostering camaraderie, promoting teamwork, and instilling a sense of responsibility towards one's own health. From health screenings to educational quizzes, every activity was designed to empower students with knowledge and ignite a passion for wellness.

           Empowering Through Education

At the heart of the campaign lay a commitment to education. Teachers, students, and even parents came together to screen participants, educate on emergency treatments for sports injuries, and impart invaluable lessons on sports and skin health. From the importance of sunscreen to knowing what to do in case of an injury, every nugget of information was a step towards empowerment.

The overarching mission of the Health Sports Campaign was clear: to cultivate a generation of healthy, informed individuals who are not just spectators but active participants in their own well-being. Through health screenings, educational workshops, and immersive sports activities, the campaign aimed to sow the seeds of lifelong wellness.

Teachers played a pivotal role in the success of the campaign, not just as instructors but as mentors and role models. From guiding students through activities to providing first aid in case of emergencies, their dedication was instrumental in creating a safe and nurturing environment. As for the students, they weren't just participants; they were agents of change, spreading awareness and knowledge to their peers and beyond.

           In Conclusion

Skin is comprised of three main layers, namely, epidermis, dermis and hypodermis.

Firstly, being anatomically at the top layer of skin, epidermis functions as protective barrier, makes new skin cells, protects the body and gives color to the skin.

Secondly, the middle layer, dermis. Dermis also has several important roles such as; (i) provides strength, resilience and stability via collagen and elastin, (ii)contains the nerve receptors essential for touch and senses, (iii)makes oil thus keeping the skin smooth and soft, (iv) produces sweats and regulates body temperature, and (v) supplies blood and nutrients to epidermis.

Last but not least, the fatty bottom layer of skin is called hypodermis, which carries multiple vital roles, for example, helps the nerves and blood vessels, cushions muscle and bones, connects skin to bone and muscle via connective tissues, and regulates body temperature.

These three layers of skin work harmoniously and hardworkingly in helping the skin to have the best performance and functionality.

Like any other body organs, skin also undergoes many changes through out one’s entire life. Starting from childhood to puberty, then to adulthood and later become elderly, skin always changed. It is absolutely natural for our body to age, but when skin ages, it also becomes saggy. Saggy skin happened when one’s skin loses its stability, firmness and strength due to significant reduction of two most important skin proteins, the collagen and elastin in the dermis layer. Saggy skin usually occurs among 50 to 60 years old people and it can be seen at several parts of the body, for instance, cheeks, jowls, eyelids, chin, throat and stomach. Besides aging, there are several other factors that cause saggy skin, including:

As discussed in our previous acne article, Acne Vulagris can be caused by many reasons and must treated specifically based on root causes, accordingly. Acnes are often caused by bacterial infection namely, Propionibacterium acnes. But some other types could be triggered by fungal (fungal acne) or mites (demodex mites).

Therefore, it is mandatory to treat each and every type of acnes correctly based on different root causes, in order to prevent it from occurring again and again at the same spot or other skin areas. To cure acne, we must seek professional help and guidance from trusted acne experts or dermatologists.

These experts will not only give you the right diagnosis and best treatments for acne, but they also provide you vital knowledge and awareness about how to appreciate and understand your skin better. They also will help you prevent scarring, or other damage to your skin.

Acne treatment steps will be given depending on patient’s age, the type and severity of acnes. Topical medications and drugs are prescribed both for oral and external application. In common practice, when the skin is still full of flares and actively growing acnes, doctors will start some antibiotics such as sulphur or benzoyl peroxide to stop the infections by killing the fungal or yeasts. Some Retinoids drugs in form of cream, gels and lotion will come handy for mild infections.

Then, once the infections are stopped completely, other active treatments (such as light therapy, chemical peel, drainage and extraction, steroid injections) will be done. The healing process will take some weeks or months, but it is actually much depending on severity of acne and how committed and disciplined the patients towards medications and treatments suggested by skin doctor.

Hair loss is a condition that affects millions worldwide, with causes ranging from genetics and hormonal changes to stress and lifestyle factors. Male and female pattern baldness, medically known as androgenetic alopecia, is the most common type, often resulting from a combination of genetics and hormonal shifts. Alopecia areata, an autoimmune condition, and telogen effluvium, often triggered by stress or illness, are other forms of hair loss. The psychological impact of hair loss cannot be overstated; it can lead to decreased self-esteem, social anxiety, and in severe cases, depression.

While surgical hair restoration methods like transplants have been popular these last few years, they're not without drawbacks. They can be invasive, expensive, and come with risks such as infection or scarring. On the other hand, non-surgical hair loss treatments that are less invasive options offer effective solutions with fewer risks and lower costs. They are ideal for those seeking effective results without the commitments and downsides of surgery.
